Leadership & Leading Through Volatility

Description:
Since George Floyd's murder on May 25, 2020 executives are focusing on the demands of multiple stakeholders who are holding leaders accountable for racial justice and equity in their organizations. To go beyond crisis communication and philanthropic donations to meaningful action and change, executives are tasking their organizations to review their HR practices such as hiring, DEI training, promotion, and compensation. Though this is essential diversity work, for leaders to role model racial justice and equity in their organizations, the next critical step is to break the discomfort of talking about race.

Target Audience: Leaders and Managers

Duration Range: 1 - 2 days

Description:
Now what? Employees, line managers, and often business leaders ask this simple yet complicated question following the announcement of a merger, acquisition, or downsizing. To make things even more complicated, here are some of the other typical questions they ask:

  • What's going to happen to me?
  • Who will go, who will stay, how will this be decided, who will decide?
  • What's going to change? What are the special "MADD" change management issues?
  • Will I get to keep my current job, will I have a new job, or will I lose my job?
  • How will my pay and benefits be affected?
  • What will happen to me if I lose my job?

Target Audience: Leaders and Managers

Duration Range: 1/2 - 1 day

Description:
One of the most critical tasks for current and future leaders is focusing on preserving the quality of the core business while driving strategic change, promoting innovation, and building a future of sustainable growth. Maintaining this focus across multiple goals requires strengths in driving results through many other colleagues – some of whom report to you and others who do not. In this session, participants will gain insights about their leadership and influence skills while enhancing their options to effect change through others at all levels of the organization.

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • Understand the role that influence plays in leadership
  • Use an analytical tool to diagnose influence situations
  • Be able to distinguish between different influence strategies, and when each is most/least impactful
  • Gain insight into personal influence strategy strengths and challenges
  • Develop an action plan to improve critical influence strategies to strengthen leadership capabilities and achieve greater business outcomes at their organization

Target Audience: Leaders and Managers at all levels

Duration Range: 1/2 - 1 day

Description:
Regardless of the amount of time and effort spent on organizational strategy, execution is where the rubber meets the road – how to achieve it and how to sustain it. "Since Michael Porter's seminal work in the 1980s, we have had a clear and widely accepted definition of what strategy is – but we know a lot less about translating a strategy into results. Books and articles on strategy outnumber those on execution by order of magnitude. And what little has been written on execution focuses on tactics or generalize from a single case. So what do we know about strategy execution?"

By the end of this session, participants will understand and apply:

  • The role of cross-functional coordination and flexibility in establishing and maintaining alignment in execution
  • Approaches to communicating about strategic initiative implementation and performance expectations
  • The change management role of "distributed leaders," in the middle of the business to implement strategic initiatives
  • An action plan to identify opportunities and challenges to successful strategic alignment and execution for their strategic initiatives

Target Audience: Leaders and Managers

Duration Range: 1/2 - 1 day

Description:
The leadership industry is a $20 billion annually, yet Gallup's 2019 employee engagement survey data indicated a mere 34% of employees were highly engaged – before the current pandemic-related turbulence and disruptions. What are the leadership implications for resolving employees' stress, trust, and resilience issues impacting productivity, profitability, customer relations, innovation, costs, and efficiency?

By the end of this session, participants will understand and apply:

  • The link between leadership and talent engagement
  • Insights into one's leadership mindset, style, and the impact on the workforce and business
  • Strategies to authentically engage or re-engage employees
  • An action plan to identify opportunities and challenges to leading a workforce

Target Audience: Leaders and Managers

Duration Range: 1/2 - 1 day

Description:
A critical skill for leaders, whether in-person or with remote, virtual workforces, is the ability to guide teams to leverage the potential of differences. This is especially true in today's diverse workplace where, all too often, differences result in disruption, misunderstanding, conflict and lost opportunities. This program leverages the synergy of Emotional Intelligence with Diversity and Inclusion to provide leaders the knowledge, insights and tools to build harmonious, engaging and productive organizations.

During this program you will learn methods to manage emotions triggered by differences, knowledge about cultural differences and values, and strategies to build inclusive, collaborative and productive teams and organizations.

Target Audience: Leaders and Managers

Duration Range: 1 day (may be conducted in two-hour segments)

Managing Performance and Careers

Description:
From the time we are children, most of us are taught to avoid and abhor being caught making mistakes. That belief system flies in the face of the reality that mistakes are inevitable, fostering dysfunctional emotional reactions and political maneuvering rather than the more rational problem solving and decision making processes that would better serve our organizations, our teams and ourselves. While some popular literature and blogs espouse the value of "celebrating and learning from mistakes," they provide little guidance to address our predetermined beliefs about failure, nor do they provide models and tools for leaders to distinguish between and strategically respond to different types of mistakes. Because the perception of fault in oneself or others often results in strong emotional reactions, it is critical to understand the mental processes that trigger those reactions to more clearly understand mistakes in more objective, realistic terms. Managing one's responses with greater resiliency and effectiveness enables leaders to recover from overreactions and handle difficult conversations with more authenticity, courage, and positive impact.

During this session, we will illustrate a diagnostic approach to coaching through mistakes: from preventable to unavoidable, from incompetent gaffes to competent experimentation, from minor infractions to disastrous results. We will then present a comparison of common reactions as well as alternative strategies for leaders, their teams, and businesses.

Target Audience: Leaders and Managers at all levels
Duration Range: 1/2 - 1 day

Description:
Many leaders either despise coaching and difficult conversations and avoid them; others are confrontational, inciting more tension and making difficult circumstances even worse. Further, many people take a singular approach to most difficult coaching situations with their direct reports, failing to distinguish significant problems from minor ones and mitigating their effectiveness in alleviating the situation. During this session, we will provide an easy to use, 3-step approach to performance coaching that is constructive, respectful, purposeful, and achieves the two-pronged goal of addressing the issue and preserving or even building the relationship between manager and employee.

Target Audience: Leaders and Managers at all levels

Duration Range: 1/2 - 1 day

Description:
How does our understanding of the human side of change inform the best approach to coaching direct reports, peers, and even upward coaching of management? Turbulent times trigger a variety of emotions, face-saving tactics, and power-grabbing strategies, all reflecting different reactions to and stages of the change cycle. This course puts coaching in the context of the specific organizational and industry change first, then draws implications to the corporate culture. Practical approaches to coaching are provided, along with ample opportunities to practice and apply these critical skills.

Target Audience: Leaders and Managers at all levels

Duration Range: 1/2 - 1 day

Description:
In this workshop, we will provide participants a process for understanding and building awareness about themselves and their teams, which will lead to application and improvement in communication, decision-making, change management, and conflict management. Target Audience: Leaders and Managers at all levels

Duration Range: 1/2 - 1 day

Description:

Which, if any of these, describe you?

During this program we will provide templates, tools and resources to enable you or your employees to progress through the 4 stages of career transition planning.

Negotiations

Description:
Because everyone negotiates formally and informally in the workplace, this workshop addresses the challenges leaders face in today's turbulent and disruptive business environment. Participants will learn the art and science of negotiation, which involves:

  1. An analytical focus using preparation strategies and tools to identify the optimal outcomes, and to structure offers factoring in the context, knowns and unknowns, strengths and weaknesses, and ranges of positions, interests, and options.
  2. A human focus that explores how to maintain composure, build productive relationships, handle escalation of conflict, handle abuses of power and hardball tactics, and use communication tactics that account for so much of the deal-making and breaking in negotiations.

A central element of this session will be learning via hands-on experience and application to real-world negotiations.

Target Audience: Leadership version and non-leader version

Duration Range: 1 - 3 days, role plays can be customized

Description:
Similar to Business Negotiations with an emphasis on gender differences in negotiation mindsets, assumptions, biases, approaches, methods, and skills. Participants will learn how to leverage their strengths as well as overcome skill-based challenges and self-limiting thoughts that prevent them from achieving their optimal negotiation outcomes.

Description:
Same as above with the addition of topics specific to women physicians:

  • The Big Squeeze on women physicians and leaders
  • Squeezing Out – using negotiation strategies to:
    • Gain perspective
    • Manage emotions
    • Communicate more influentially to build rather than burn bridges

Target Audience: Women physicians

Duration Range: 1 - 3 days, role plays can be customized

Description:
"If you can keep your head when all about you. Are losing theirs..." by Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936). "If," from Rewards and Fairies, 1910. Anyone who has ever negotiated with a peer, vendor, employee, spouse, or teenager knows that effective negotiation involves your head, your heart, and your instincts. What baffles most people is how to keep their wits and remain "in the zone" of reason, focus, flexibility. How do emotions detract from AND enable us to achieve the best outcomes when we negotiate? How can we use emotions strategically while at the same time, remain calm and stick to reason and a sense of fairness? In short, what do we do with emotions when we're trying to get something we can't attain without the other person? In this interactive session, we debunk the myth that negotiations are conflict-ridden with winners and losers.

Target Audience: All levels

Duration Range: 1 - 2 days, role plays can be customized

Description:
What do you do when you've negotiated rationally, fairly, and respectfully, and the other person becomes aggressive or stubborn, makes threats or excessive demands, or resorts to the "higher authority" maneuver? Most people naturally become angry or intimidated, and their reaction typically results in inferior outcomes for one or all people involved. This session will show you how to apply core negotiation skills when dealing with some of the most challenging types of negotiators. Since learning about negotiations necessitates "doing negotiation," we will begin with an interactive negotiation experience, the insights from which we will use to discuss:

  • How are best practices and foundational knowledge core to dealing with tough negotiators?
  • What is the influence of emotions in negotiations?
  • Why are some people consistently tough negotiators, and why do otherwise collaborative people become tough negotiators?
  • Using a "Dealing with Tough Negotiators" assessment, develop insights about how you deal with tough negotiators based on your style and behavioral skills, and strategies for development.

Target Audience: All levels

Duration Range: 1/2 - 2 days, role plays can be customized

Description:
There are significant differences between two-party and multi-party negotiations. Multiple issues among multiple people, strategic complexity, procedural complexity, social and power complexity, informational and computational complexity are some of the problems that can cause negotiators to get caught off guard and leave money and opportunity on the table. Team choreography of roles within teams and analysis of the multiple processes, issues, interests, and positions at play is critical to obtaining optimal negotiation outcomes. This interactive session will include a group case in which coalitions, groupthink, and decision-making rules will challenge each person's ability to balance self, coalitional, and total team interests.

Target Audience: All levels

Duration Range: 1/2 - 2 days
